Omar is the most popular character of the Wire

I’ve been running a poll on this site for a while now, asking the simple question – “Who’s your The Wire favourite?”.

At the moment nearly 2500 people have voted and here are the results
Omar gets a head with almost 40% of the votes (978 votes)
Second spot goes to Stringer with 9.7%
closely followed by Bodie (8.33%) and McNulty (8.05%).

What’s particularly interesting to me is that “the baddies” are by far more popular than any of the cop characters.

ps. I’m a bit dissapointed that one of my favourites – Bubbles – are even further down the poll at 5.65% of the votes.

The Wire makes topic at Law and Society Conference?

I stumbled upon an interesting blog post about law professors that argue that shows like the Wire are bringing the justice system out of the shadows. Apparently they organised a panel conversation on the topic, with the show’s creator, David Simon attending.

When a show can have this impact, it surely deserves the title of “greatest show ever made”.

Wow. I didn’t even know about this, but apparently there’s a movie about druglord Avon Barksdale of the Wire. The movie will hit the stores in March. I’m not too sure about the quality of the movie though, have a look and share your thoughts.

Omar of The Wire – Michael K. Williams – The Philantropist

Michael K. Williams, or better known as Omar Little among the Wire fans, is keeping busy with a new project in life after the Wire. He plays Dax of the new eight part drama The Philantripist. The show also stars Neve Campbell and James Purefoy (from HBO Rome fame).

The story revolves around a billionaire globetrotting philantropist helping those in need.

With the announcement that BBC2 is going to air all five seasons of The Wire, everyone is quick to jump on the bandwagon and tell their praise. The show is scheduled for 1120pm, and will be on every night for the next 12 weeks.

Love film has a published an interview with the Wire author Ed Burns.

LF: How far were any of the characters or cases in The Wire based on real people and situations?

EB: None of them were based on real people and real situations. I knew that world intimately and I did a lot of wire tap cases – with warrants too, I mean legally! – and I know the moves. I spent thousands of hours with all sorts of gunmen and drug dealers. So creating stories is easy because you’re drawing on all that wealth and then layering the details, again, because you’ve seen it.

Who the f*ck is George Pelecanos, and what’s he doing on the Wire?

Little known to the wider audience perhaps, George Pelecanos is a DC based writer who also became producer of the show.

I’m yet to read any of his own novels, but according to the latest issue of Stop Smiling, his style seem quite similar to that of David Simon and Edward Burns; the gritty reality of the hustler. There doesn’t seem to be an excerpt online, but you can buy the magazine for a cheap $8.

Apparently the article authour and myself share the same faviourite scene, from season 2 when McNulty on purpouse drives his own car into a bridge two times after a night on the binge. So thankyou Pelecanos for writing that brilliant scene. Check it out below.

Anwan Glover aka Slim Charles – Life before and after the Wire

Stop Smiling Anwan Glover Feature

I’ve spent this morning listening to live recordings of Anwan Glovers go-go band The Backyard Band and it’s pretty damn good. I got the CD from the latest issue of Stop Smiling which has a nice lengthy feature on the Big G.

Apparently just like snoop of the wire, Anwan Glover’s character Slim Charles wasn’t that distant from his own life. In 2004 he got arrested for gun possession, and in 2007 his brother got gunned down a couple of blocks from where they grew up.

Currently living it up in New York, Anwan Glover is sharing his focus between his music and acting career. And after the wire, there’s a high demand for his services.

Here’s a brilliant clip with Slim Charles of the Wire scene stealing presence. Brilliant lines at the end.
