Omar is the most popular character of the Wire

I’ve been running a poll on this site for a while now, asking the simple question – “Who’s your The Wire favourite?”.

At the moment nearly 2500 people have voted and here are the results
Omar gets a head with almost 40% of the votes (978 votes)
Second spot goes to Stringer with 9.7%
closely followed by Bodie (8.33%) and McNulty (8.05%).

What’s particularly interesting to me is that “the baddies” are by far more popular than any of the cop characters.

ps. I’m a bit dissapointed that one of my favourites – Bubbles – are even further down the poll at 5.65% of the votes.

The Wire Season 5 Episode 2 Review

Whereas episode 1 set the scene for the final season, episode 2 really kicked things off.

The common theme seem to be to ‘stretch things’. The up and coming journo who’s trying to hard, stretching the truth for a good story. The unlikely joint venture between westside gangsters Marlo and Avon. And what about the ending – McNulty really stretching the limits. How is Bunk gonna handle this? Will McNulty himself be able to cope with it?

I can’t wait for episode 3. What’s your verdict?

The Wire Season 5 Episode 1 in Review

I bet you did the same thing as me this weekend – watching the first episode of the wire season 5.I loved the opening scene, bunk in fine form interrogating a seemingly clueless small time gangster, and later using a copying machine as a lie detector – instant classic. It was also great to see McNulty early on in the episode, I missed him in the later seasons but now he seem to be back where he belongs, in the spotlight and late night binge drinking sessions.

Another bright point was the journo crew at the Baltimore Sun which seem to be just as much of a motley crew as the gangsters and police.

It was great to see so many familiar faces in one single episode – McNulty, Bunk, Kima, Herc, Marlo, Prop Joe, Bubs, Carter, Carcetti, Chris, Snoop, Michael, Dukie (boy, he’s grown) and lots more.

I just realized how much I missed these characters, and how happy I am that they are back J

The Wire as a Video Game?

Media scholar Jason Mittel of the blog Just TV, has published a draft of what seem to become an excellent essay about the Wire and how it is narratively constructed. A good read for anyone interested in understanding some of the underlying appeal of the show.

After discussing whether or not to assess the wire as a televised novel, he goes on to compare the wire with the narrative structure of a video game. This actually made me think – is this something you would like to see?

Excerpt: Ultimately the characters in The Wire, while quite human and multi-dimensional, are as narrowly defined in their possibilities as typical videogame avatars. They each do what they do because that is the way the game is played—Bubbles can’t get clean, McNulty can’t follow orders, Avon can’t stop fighting for his corners, Sobotka can’t let go of the glory days of the shipyard. The characters with agency to change, like Stringer Bell, D’Angelo Barksdale, or Bunny Colvin, find the systems too resistant, the “boss levels” too difficult, to overcome the status quo.

Ultimately it is through its focus on procedure, at the levels of action, play, and code, that The Wire generates its verisimilitude, creating a ludic engagement with the SimCity of 21st century Baltimore.

Me myself would love to be able to take on the role of a Baltimore cop or hoodie and be part of evolving the story; solving crimes, having a drinking session with Bunk and McNulty or running packages.

What do you think? Would you play good cop, bad cop, king pin or perhaps junkie? Would it even be possible to transfer the dynamics of the show to the video game medium?

Chris and Snoop, Bodie or McNulty – Who’s the coolest mother f*cker of the Wire?

So, from the comments in my previous post and surfing around the great old web, I’ve learnt that a lot of people really like the characters Chris and Snoop. It sort of shocked me as they are in my opinion just bad people. Their fun comments would have made them more appealing in a standard Hollywood production like Bad Boys, or whatever, but in a show such as the Wire they still come out like real fuck-ups that should be jailed for life. Any how, It made me think about who’s the most popular character in the wire.

My list:

McNulty, beacuse he’s an original hero with a lot of shit on his hands but still has a good heart.
Bunk, because he’s a great police (you have to pronounce that Baltimore style), and likes another shot straight after throwing up
Bubbles, living the hard life with great style and being a true entrepreneur
Bodie, one cool dude that didn’t bend for no one
Omar, although a murderous soul he does have a code to only kill people in the game…
Stringer, thought he was a really cool dude in the first two seasons, wanting to take the game to a whole new level of organisation – profit over honor and such.. Although I think he lost it at the end
Kima, although liked her better in the first 3 seasons

And for the bottom scrap, there’s Chris and Snoop. Just check out this video collage.
