Interview with Ed Burns at Lovefilm
Love film has a published an interview with the Wire author Ed Burns.
LF: How far were any of the characters or cases in The Wire based on real people and situations?
EB: None of them were based on real people and real situations. I knew that world intimately and I did a lot of wire tap cases – with warrants too, I mean legally! – and I know the moves. I spent thousands of hours with all sorts of gunmen and drug dealers. So creating stories is easy because you’re drawing on all that wealth and then layering the details, again, because you’ve seen it.

The Wire Bet Poker Promo
Love this ad, really cool feel to it. Haven’t seen anything like this in the UK yet, but perhaps will do now that the wire is getting bigger over here also. Enjoy below.

Who the f*ck is George Pelecanos, and what’s he doing on the Wire?
Little known to the wider audience perhaps, George Pelecanos is a DC based writer who also became producer of the show.
I’m yet to read any of his own novels, but according to the latest issue of Stop Smiling, his style seem quite similar to that of David Simon and Edward Burns; the gritty reality of the hustler. There doesn’t seem to be an excerpt online, but you can buy the magazine for a cheap $8.
Apparently the article authour and myself share the same faviourite scene, from season 2 when McNulty on purpouse drives his own car into a bridge two times after a night on the binge. So thankyou Pelecanos for writing that brilliant scene. Check it out below.

Anwan Glover aka Slim Charles – Life before and after the Wire
What happened to Slim Charles from the Wire? I know.

Stop Smiling Anwan Glover Feature
I’ve spent this morning listening to live recordings of Anwan Glovers go-go band The Backyard Band and it’s pretty damn good. I got the CD from the latest issue of Stop Smiling which has a nice lengthy feature on the Big G.
Apparently just like snoop of the wire, Anwan Glover’s character Slim Charles wasn’t that distant from his own life. In 2004 he got arrested for gun possession, and in 2007 his brother got gunned down a couple of blocks from where they grew up.
Currently living it up in New York, Anwan Glover is sharing his focus between his music and acting career. And after the wire, there’s a high demand for his services.
Here’s a brilliant clip with Slim Charles of the Wire scene stealing presence. Brilliant lines at the end.
“Don’t matter who did what to who at this point, fact is we went to war and now there ain’t no going back. I mean, shit, it’s what war is you know, once you’re innit, your innit.. If it’s a lie, then we fight on that lie, but we got to fight”

Generation Kill – First Impression
Haven’t written anything in ages, or at least since the wire season 5 ended. Look forward to the DVD box
but anyways, what I wanted to write was just a short first impression note on another show by David Simon and Ed Burns, Generation Kill.
I’ve only watched the very first episode and just like the wire I assume it will take a couple of episode before it sucks you right in. Also like the wire it has the same realistic feel to it (although I don’t know if the creators are as familiar with the war in the dessert as they’re with the war on the streets).
IMDB users so far are rating the show an impressive 9.0 (compared to the wire 9.7), but suspect this might shoot up once the show catching main stream glory.
What’s your verdict so far? Please don’t post any spoilers as I’ve yet to watch the first seven episodes.

The Wire, The End, The City – Cheers!
Five season of the Wire is gone. It’s been one hell of a ride. Big ups and downs.
Have to say that I thought the ending was pretty damn perfect. A little bit sentimental, but not over the top. And even if the show came to and end, the city and streets continue to live its life…
Cheers to you McNulty, Bunk, Daniels, Rhonda, Kima, Herc, Ellis, Lester, Bubbles, Omar, Prez, Burrell, Bodie, Avon, Stringer, Carcetti, Marlo, Chris, Bunny, Cutty, Poot, Snoop, Prop Joe, Duke, Clay Davis, Wee-Bey, D’Angelo, Clarence, Valchek, Monk, Shamrock, Fitz, Sobotka, Gus, Scott, The Greek, Butchie, O-Dog, and the rest of you!
One of my favourite scenes, when McNulty gets profiled
Pure genious!
What’s your favourite The Wire moments, from any season?
The Wire Season 5 Episode 7 Review
Clay Davis is one slick smooth talker. Damn, he got ‘em all wrapped around his little finger. Sheeeeiiit. Don’t really like that man.
McNulty’s trying to do good with his new resources, but I’m still fairly confident that he will f*ck up soon. The writing’s on the wall unfortunately. With the homeless people getting faces and families, it’s all getting too personal.
Same thing with Omar. Good to see him giving Michael a bit of scare, but I’m still pretty sure he will make a misstake soon – it’s just too personal for him. And that limp leg doesn’t really help either…
Bunk seem to be about to crack soon, don’t think he’ll rat on McNulty or Freamon, but he’s pretty pissed off. Also liked the scene when he’s interrogating Michael. Hope he gets to Chris and Snoop soon.
btw, did you notice that Dominic West (playing McNulty) directed this episode? How cool is that!
I’ll leave you today with a brilliant edit of Clay Davis – sheeeeeeeeeiiiiiit!
